What are QR codes?

QR codeQR codes are a new type of 2-D barcode symbology arranged in square patterns commonly on a white background. The “QR” stands for quick response which means the contents can be decoded at high speed. QR codes can include up to 7,100 characters of numeric code, 4,300 alphanumeric characters, or 3,000 binary (8 bits) units.

Most importantly, they can be scanned by any smartphone with camera feature using free QR scanning programs. The most common use is in print media ads for readers to be hyper-linked to a page with more in-depth, product-specific information. Other uses can include contact information, email, IM, SMS or wireless phone numbers.

How are QR codes used?

  • Bridge the gap between offline and online media - You do not need to include your web address or a phone number anymore. And, there is no risk that people may copy them incorrectly. At the very moment when prospects are exposed to your marketing message, they can scan the QR code and get connected to your offer, call to action or web site.
  • Promote a call to action - You can link the codes to how-to videos, product application notes or launching a web site. You can also deliver a text message with a promo code to get a discount. Or you can create a “Call us” or “Email us” messages, where people can scan the code and automatically call or send an email.
  • Quick Access to Customer Service or Technical Support – With PCLTool SDK – Options V or VI, a custom .tpt script can be written to selectively insert static or variable (personalized) QR Codes in any location or on any page within a print stream captured and redirected as input to our PCLXForm program.

PCLXForm Sample Scripts

(st0211pi.tpt) – Add a QR code while converting/splitting PCL documents into PDF files:

This sample script was modified to add the QR code shown above to the first page of every PDF file created from our .\data\pptr.pcl file. Look in our .\out folder for the PDFs with the inserted QR code.

(QRCodeDemo.tpt) – Add a QR code by streamediting legacy PCL into updated PCL for printing.

This sample script was created to add the QR code shown above to the first page of every document found in the input PCL file (.\data\pptr.pcl). This script uses PCLXForm’s streamedit functions to insert the PCL escape codes required to image the QR code when the output PCL is sent to a printer and/or later converted to PDF or some other format. Look in our .\out folder for the PCL file with the inserted QR code.
